Towards Meaningful Robot Gesture

چکیده
Humanoid robot companions that are intended to engage in natural and fluent human-robot interaction are supposed to combine speech with non-verbal modalities for comprehensible and believable behavior. We present an approach to enable the humanoid robot ASIMO to flexibly produce and synchronize speech and co-verbal gestures at run-time, while not being limited to a predefined repertoire of motor action. Since this research challenge has already been tackled in various ways within the domain of virtual conversational agents, we build upon the experience gained from the development of a speech and gesture production model used for our virtual human Max. Being one of the most sophisticated multi-modal schedulers, the Articulated Communicator Engine (ACE) has replaced the use of lexicons of canned behaviors with an on-the-spot production of flexibly planned behavior representations. As an underlying action generation architecture, we explain how ACE draws upon a tight, bi-directional coupling of ASIMO’s perceptuo-motor system with multi-modal scheduling via both efferent control signals and afferent

Leap Motion Device for Gesture Controlling an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (Robot)
A new scope of human-computer interaction utilizes the algorithms of computer vision and image processing for detecting the gesture, understanding its objective and making it meaningful for the computer to understand and then interact with the humans. The recent introduction of "Leap Motion" is a big revolution in the field of gesture control technology. Using gesture control mode in the field ...
متن کاملGesture Spotting and Recognition for Human-Robot Interaction
Visual interpretation of gestures can be useful in accomplishing natural human–robot interaction (HRI). Previous HRI research focused on issues such as hand gestures, sign language, and command gesture recognition. Automatic recognition of whole-body gestures is required in order for HRI to operate naturally. This presents a challenging problem, because describing and modeling meaningful gestur...

This article presents the design of Iromec, a modular robot companion tailored towards engaging in social exchanges with children with different disabilities with the aim to empower them to discover a wide rage of play styles from solitary to social and cooperative play. In particular this paper focuses on expressiveness as a fundamental feature of the robot for engaging in meaningful interacti...
متن کاملDynamic Reconfiguration of Mission Parameters in Underwater Human-Robot Collaboration
This paper presents a real-time programming and parameter reconfiguration method for autonomous underwater robots in human-robot collaborative tasks. Using a set of intuitive and meaningful hand gestures, we develop a syntactically simple framework that is computationally more efficient than a complex, grammar-based approach. In the proposed framework, a convolutional neural network is trained ...
متن کاملGesture Recognition Supporting the Interaction of Humans with Socially Assistive Robots
We propose a new approach for vision-based gesture recognition to support robust and efficient human robot interaction towards developing socially assistive robots. The considered gestural vocabulary consists of five, user specified hand gestures that convey messages of fundamental importance in the context of human-robot dialogue. Despite their small number, the recognition of these gestures e...
